Thermador Gas Rangetop Repair
Star burners, ExtraLow simmer and a griddle or grill module in one drop-in top. Most faults are ignition, gas flow or a control that has stopped cycling correctly.
Symptoms we hear
Described as behaviour rather than as a code. We do not publish fault codes we cannot verify, and a symptom narrows a diagnosis further than a number does anyway.
- A burner clicks continuously after the flame has already lit
- One burner will not light while the others light normally
- Flames are yellow and lazy instead of blue and defined
- The simmer setting no longer holds low heat and boils over instead
- A strong gas smell at the top before ignition catches
- The griddle overshoots its set temperature or never reaches it
- Burner caps sit unevenly and the flame pattern is lopsided
- Knobs feel gritty or stiff and no longer click into position
What actually fails
- Spark modules and igniter electrodes contaminated by boilovers, which click without producing a spark at the right point
- Blocked burner ports and clogged star channels, which distort the flame pattern rather than stopping it
- Gas valve stems that stiffen with grease and age until the detents are gone
- The simmer control circuit that cycles the flame, which fails by staying on rather than by staying off
- Griddle and grill temperature sensors and their thermostats
- Stainless trim, screws and burner hardware corroding in the coastal ZIPs
What makes a Thermador top different to diagnose
Thermador’s star-shaped burner geometry spreads the flame through channels rather than around a simple ring, and the low-simmer setting works by cycling the flame rather than by holding a tiny standing flame. Both design choices are good for cooking and both change how faults present. A star burner with partly blocked channels does not go out, it goes lopsided, and the cook notices the pan scorching on one side long before anyone thinks the appliance is broken. A simmer circuit that has failed on stays lit at full low flame instead of cycling, so the symptom is food boiling when it should be barely moving.
That is why we do not diagnose these tops from a phone description alone. We want to watch the burner light, watch the flame at three settings, and watch what the simmer does over four or five minutes.
Ignition faults, in order of likelihood
Continuous clicking after a burner has lit is the single most common call. In almost every case the spark electrode or its ceramic is wet or fouled from a boilover, and the module keeps firing because it never sees a satisfactory flame. Cleaning and drying solves a fair share of these. When it does not, the fault sits either in the electrode itself, in the wiring back to the module, or in the module.
A burner that will not light while its neighbours light normally is usually mechanical rather than electrical. Ports get blocked with carbon and with the sugar from anything that has boiled over. Caps get seated a millimetre out of position after a cleaning and never quite return. We take the burner apart, clear it properly, and reseat it, and we tell you honestly when that is all it needed.
Gas work is not a place to guess
We are licensed and insured in Florida, and we treat gas the way it deserves to be treated. If we smell gas at the top before ignition, we test rather than theorise. If a rangetop has been converted between natural gas and propane at some point in its life and the orifices do not match the supply, the flames tell us and we correct it properly rather than adjusting an air shutter until it looks acceptable.
Salt air on the coast
Along the coastal ZIPs, stainless is not maintenance-free. Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and the older streets of St. Augustine all sit close enough to the ocean that chloride-laden air reaches the kitchen every time a window opens. On rangetops this shows up first in the fasteners and the hardware under the burner caps, then in pitting on the drip tray and the bullnose, and eventually in seized screws that turn a twenty-minute burner service into an hour of extraction. We carry replacement hardware for that reason.
If your top is within a mile or two of the water, the most useful thing you can do between visits is wipe the surface down with fresh water and dry it, rather than relying on a stainless polish that leaves an oily film for salt to sit in.
Ventilation is part of the appliance
A professional-style gas top under an undersized or badly ducted hood produces grease where you cannot see it, and that grease ends up in the igniters, in the knob shafts and in every gap in the trim. Where we find a ventilation problem causing repeat rangetop faults, we say so, because replacing the same parts every year is not a repair strategy.

Local factor
Salt air
Chloride-laden air off the ocean reaches condensers, fasteners and hinges in the coastal ZIPs long before anything wears out mechanically.
Which is why the first questions on a call are where the appliance is installed and how long it has been there, not which model it is.

After a gas rangetops visit
Each entry is one visit: what failed, what was measured, what was changed. They are printed as they were given to us, and the less flattering ones are printed too.
He did diagnose it correctly, a failed spark module, and the top works properly now. What I did not like was being told a different part was needed at the first visit before anything was measured.

Grease had worked its way under the burner bases and one would not seat flat. He stripped the top down, cleaned everything back to bare metal and reset the burner heights so pans sit level again.
Oscar P.2026-01-22
The simmer setting on our largest burner had become useless. He adjusted the valve bypass screws and cleaned the ports, which helped a lot, though the smallest burner still runs hotter than I want.

Salt air and stainless
In the coastal ZIPs, chloride air works on condensers, hinges, fasteners and roof-mounted blowers every day of the year. What fails first and what helps.

Professional ranges
One appliance doing two jobs. The rangetop half and the oven half fail in completely different ways, and a range visit has to cover both properly.
Ventilation
Hoods, inline blowers and roof-mounted units. The motor is often nowhere near the kitchen, and on the coast it is sitting in salt air all year.
Wall ovens
Built into cabinetry, carrying a heavy door and a lot of heat. Wall ovens fail at the door, at the sensor and at whatever the last self-clean cycle pushed too far.
Induction cooktops
Full-surface induction is an electronics platform under a sheet of glass. When a zone dies it is almost never an element, and diagnosis has to start at the inverter boards.
