Questions
Questions we are asked, answered straight
Including the two that matter most: what we are not allowed to claim about ourselves, and what a visit costs before anything is ordered.
About the company
Are you an authorized Thermador service centre?
No. Meridian Appliance Works is an independent appliance repair company and holds no Thermador or BSH Home Appliances accreditation of any kind. We name the brand only to identify the appliances we work on. The full independence statement is in the footer of every page.
What certification do you actually hold?
EPA Section 608 certified for sealed-system refrigeration work. That is a federal requirement to open a sealed refrigeration system, so it is a legal permission rather than a manufacturer endorsement. It is the only certification we claim. We are also licensed and insured in the State of Florida.
Why is Thermador not in your company name?
Because an independent company that puts a manufacturer's mark in its trading name is implying a relationship it does not have. Our name is our own. The brand appears on this site only where it identifies the equipment we service.
Are you a Thermador dealer, and can you sell me an appliance?
No. Meridian Appliance Works is not a dealer, authorized or otherwise, not a retailer, and not part of any manufacturer service program. We do not sell appliances, quote an installation of a new one or register a purchase. We repair the built-in equipment already in your kitchen, and that is the whole of it.
Do you service heating, air conditioning or ductwork?
Never, in any ZIP we cover. Meridian Appliance Works works on built-in kitchen appliances: ovens, cooktops, rangetops, ranges, refrigeration and wine columns, dishwashers and cooker hoods. Furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, mini-splits and duct runs are a licensed HVAC contractor's trade. A range hood has a duct and a refrigeration column has a condenser, and neither of those makes us a heating and air company.
Do you publish customer reviews or ratings?
Yes, on the reviews page and beside the work they describe. Each entry is one visit in the words of the person whose kitchen it was, and the score beside them is the arithmetic mean of exactly the set printed on that page. A star figure never appears on a page that does not show the reviews behind it.
Booking and cost
How much does it cost to find out what is wrong?
$80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair when you approve the work. The fee is the same for every appliance class and every address inside the service radius. A written estimate comes before any part is ordered or fitted.
Can you come out after hours or at the weekend?
We work Mon–Fri 8am–6pm · Sat 9am–4pm, by appointment, and no later. There is no emergency line, because we will not advertise one we do not staff. Messages left outside those hours are answered the next working morning.
How far do you drive?
40 miles by road from Fruit Cove. Every distance quoted on this site is drive distance, not a straight line. Every distance on this site is measured on the road, which matters in a metro split by a river.
What warranty comes with the work?
90 days labour, 365 days parts, genuine OEM components. Genuine OEM parts, ordered through the same BSH distribution channel that serves Thermador, Bosch and Gaggenau.
The equipment
My induction cooktop has stopped responding in one area. Is that a burner?
There is no burner to fail. Freedom Induction is a single continuous surface with pan detection, and the electronics behind it are what respond. A dead area points at the coil boards underneath, at the cooling fan that keeps them within temperature, or at the touch control interface, and those are three separate diagnoses.
My steam oven runs a cycle but barely produces steam. What is that?
Usually one of four things, and they are separable on the day: the generator is not reaching temperature, the fill side is not delivering water, the level sensing is reporting incorrectly, or the door is no longer sealing a humid cavity. We reproduce the cycle and watch fill, heat and drain in sequence rather than replacing the generator on the strength of the symptom.
Do I have to pull my refrigeration column out for you?
No, and please do not. A panel-ready column is installed flush into the cabinetry and comes forward on its rails; doing that with the doors loaded, or without releasing the anti-tip fixing, is how cabinetry and floors get damaged. We do it as part of the visit.
The oven died right after a self-clean cycle. Is that a coincidence?
Rarely. Self-clean drives the cavity far above cooking temperature and that is the hardest thermal event the appliance ever experiences. Thermal cutouts and control electronics fail during or immediately after it more often than at any other time.
Why do you need the serial number and not just the model?
Because a model that stayed in production for years did not stay identical. Boards, valves, hinges and door assemblies were revised, and the serial is what tells the parts channel which revision is in your kitchen. Reading it off the data plate before we order is the difference between one visit and three.
How long do parts take to arrive?
Common wear items — hinges, springs, gaskets, thermistors, fan motors, capacitors — are usually quick. Control and inverter boards, sealed-system components and anything panel-specific take longer, and some parts for older equipment are discontinued outright. We put the expected wait in the written estimate rather than after you have approved it.
Do you work on Bosch or Gaggenau appliances too?
This site is about Thermador equipment. The three brands are BSH Home Appliances siblings and share parts channels and diagnostic conventions, so ask us — but do not read that as a claim of accreditation for any of them.
Cost, and whether to fix it at all
What is the 50 percent rule for appliance repair?
A rule of thumb: if the repair comes to more than half of replacing the appliance, replace it instead. Comparable equipment starts at $4,200 here, appliance only, so the line sits near $2,100. In our own table 1 band of 7 reaches that at its top; the rest stay clear of it.
Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old built-in?
Age is not what decides it; parts availability is. A hinge, a fan motor, an element or a sensor on a twenty-year-old cavity is usually still supported and still sits in the hundreds. What ends the conversation is a discontinued board or a sealed-system failure, and the diagnosis says which you have.
What is the most expensive part to replace?
The sealed refrigeration system in a column — compressor, condenser or evaporator, with the refrigerant work around it — at $920–$2,420. Opening a sealed circuit is federally regulated, which is why EPA Section 608 is the credential that matters on that job rather than any manufacturer badge.
Why do two quotes for the same symptom differ so much?
Because a symptom is not a part. A cavity that will not heat can be an element, a sensor, a thermal cutout or a control board, and that is $170–$550 at one end against $440–$1,100 at the other. A number given over the telephone is guessing which one it is.
How long does built-in equipment last before that point?
No figure this company has measured, and we will not publish one as though there were. What the trade generally observes is fifteen to twenty years from built-in kitchen equipment, and that the end usually arrives as a discontinued part rather than as a worn-out machine.
Price bands
Parts and labour together, for work completed.
What does it cost, in one table?
Between $80 and $2,420, depending which component is at fault. Before the appliance is opened a band is the honest answer; a single number is a guess in a quote's clothing.
| What turns out to be at fault | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit, credited against the repair | $80 |
| Refrigeration column sealed system | $920–$2,420 |
| Control board or touch panel | $440–$1,100 |

Oven temperature calibration
Calibrating oven temp means measuring the true heat, then entering an offset: -35°F to +35°F on display ovens, or a knob routine on Professional ranges.

Thermador oven lifespan
A Thermador oven has no fixed lifespan: the cavity is built to be repaired, so its life is set by the igniters, elements, fan and controls. What fails first.

Dead after self-clean
A wall oven that completes a clean cycle and then goes completely dead is a recognisable fault with a recognisable cause. What opened, and why it opened.
Independent, and saying so plainly
Meridian Appliance Works is an independent service company. We name Thermador only to say which appliances we work on: built-in equipment from Thermador and the rest of the BSH Home Appliances line, diagnosed and repaired by our own technicians using genuine OEM parts.
- EPA Section 608 certified for sealed-system refrigeration work. That is a federal requirement to open a sealed refrigeration system, and it is the only certification we hold out.
- Licensed and insured in the State of Florida.
- Parts come through the same BSH Home Appliances distribution channel that serves Bosch and Gaggenau, which is why lead times on a Thermador part behave the way they do.
