Thermador Sapphire Dishwasher Repair
Quiet, panel-ready and third-racked, which makes a fault easy to ignore. Most calls here are a machine still finishing its cycle and no longer doing the job.
Symptoms we hear
Described as behaviour rather than as a code. We do not publish fault codes we cannot verify, and a symptom narrows a diagnosis further than a number does anyway.
- Glassware and cutlery come out gritty or with soil redeposited on them
- The top rack cleans poorly while the bottom rack is acceptable
- Dishes are still wet at the end of a cycle that used to dry them
- Water is standing in the sump at the end of every cycle
- The cycle runs far longer than its stated time before it finishes
- The third rack sprays weakly or not at all
- A leak appears at the bottom of the door or under the toe-kick
- The door drops open instead of holding at an angle
What actually fails
- Spray arm jets blocked by debris the filter should have caught, which changes coverage long before anything stops working
- The heating element and its thermostat, which affect wash temperature and drying together
- Drain pumps and filters blocked by debris that the filter should have caught
- Water inlet valves that stick or restrict, extending cycle times
- Door hinge cables and springs, which fail and let a heavy panelled door swing
- Sump gaskets and hose connections behind the toe-kick, which leak slowly before they leak visibly
A quiet appliance hides its own decline
Sapphire dishwashers are engineered to be almost inaudible, fully integrated behind a custom panel and generous inside, with a third rack for flat and awkward items and a drying system that is one of the reasons people buy them in the first place. All of that is good. It also means that when performance starts to fall away, there is very little to notice. No noise change, no visible fault, just glassware that gradually stops looking right.
That is why most of our dishwasher calls in this market are not about a machine that has stopped. They are about a machine that is still running a full cycle and no longer doing the job.
Coverage, not power, is what usually fails
A dishwasher cleans by geometry. The arms are designed to throw a specific pattern at a specific pressure, and the load is arranged around that pattern. When individual jets block — a seed, a fragment of label, a sliver of glass — the pattern degrades unevenly, which is exactly why the complaint so often begins as the top rack or the third rack cleaning badly while the bottom looks acceptable. Nothing has broken. The spray has changed shape.
The other half of the same story is what the arms are spraying. A filter that has never been cleaned keeps soil in suspension, so the machine redistributes it across the load instead of removing it, and the result reads as poor detergent rather than as a maintenance failure.
Temperature is the third variable. Wash performance and drying both depend on the water reaching the temperature the cycle expects, so an element or a thermostat that is no longer doing its job shows up first as dishes that are still wet, and second as a wash that quietly cleans worse.
What we actually do about it
We measure before we sell anything. That means checking incoming water temperature, checking fill volume and inlet restriction, pulling and inspecting the spray arms and the filter, testing the element and its thermostat, and running a cycle to see where the time is actually going.
Clearing arms and filters and correcting how the machine is loaded and dosed fixes a real proportion of these calls outright. Where a component has genuinely gone, we quote it in writing before we order anything, against the model and serial from the plate on the inner door edge rather than against the model alone.
Drains, filters and the thing everyone skips
Standing water at the end of the cycle is a drain fault, and it splits four ways: the filter, the drain path outside the machine, the check valve, or the pump. The order matters, because the pump is the most expensive of the four and the least likely to be the cause. A disposer fitted without its knockout plug removed, an air gap that has clogged, or a hose crushed when the machine was pushed back into its cabinet will all imitate a dead pump convincingly.
The filter is the one owners are meant to clean and almost never do, and in a machine this quiet there is no feedback telling you it needs doing. Ten minutes with the filter out under a running tap is genuinely worth doing once a month.
Doors and panels
An integrated dishwasher carries the weight of a custom cabinet panel on hinge mechanisms tensioned for that weight. When the door begins to drop rather than holding where you leave it, the hinge cable or spring is failing, and it is worth fixing before it lets go entirely with the door loaded.

Plumbed supply
This class is plumbed into the house, so the shut-off, the supply line, the filter and the drain path are part of every diagnosis, not an afterthought.
Which is why the first questions on a call are where the appliance is installed and how long it has been there, not which model it is.

After a dishwashers visit
Each entry is one visit: what failed, what was measured, what was changed. They are printed as they were given to us, and the less flattering ones are printed too.
The upper spray arm had stopped turning and glasses were coming out dirty. He replaced the arm bearing and cleared the feed tube. It washes properly, though the panel still shows a stale error code.

The leak is fixed and the machine runs. It took three visits to get there, and on the second one nobody arrived at all. I found that out only after calling to ask where the technician was.
Ivor H.2025-05-15
Our machine would fill and then stop with an error. He found the inlet valve partly blocked with grit and the flow meter reading low, replaced both and ran a full cycle through before he packed up.

Dishwasher not draining
Standing water is rarely the pump. The order a technician works through it: filter, drain path, air gap and disposer, check valve, then the pump itself.

Column access and service
A panel-ready column has to come forward on its rails before real diagnosis begins. What that sequence involves and why flush installation adds time.
Related appliances
Column refrigeration
Panel-ready columns installed flush into cabinetry. Service starts with pulling the unit forward on its rails, and the ice maker is the assembly that fails first.
Steam ovens
A small water system inside an oven: fill, heat, level sensing, drain and a sealed door. Weak steam is one of those five, and they are separable in an hour.
Wall ovens
Built into cabinetry, carrying a heavy door and a lot of heat. Wall ovens fail at the door, at the sensor and at whatever the last self-clean cycle pushed too far.
Induction cooktops
Full-surface induction is an electronics platform under a sheet of glass. When a zone dies it is almost never an element, and diagnosis has to start at the inverter boards.
